Diaspora Africans in Trade & Investment

What is DATI?

Established in 2023, the Diaspora Africans in Trade and Investment (DATI) initiative harnesses the unique expertise, experience, and networks of African diaspora professionals from both the U.S. government and the private sector. By leveraging a global network of people of African descent, DATI engages the African diaspora in advancing trade and investment opportunities.

DATI's work aligns with key trade programs such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aiming to enhance trade and investment within Africa, as well as between Africa, the U.S., and its diaspora. Its team members include current and former representatives from agencies such as USTR, USAID, USEXIM, USTDA, USADF, USDA, SBA, and the State Department.

A core objective of DATI is to develop and strengthen a comprehensive database of interested African and diaspora businesses, international financial and development programs, and a consolidated calendar of Africa-focused trade events.

Beyond outreach, DATI prioritizes meaningful engagement with both diaspora and continental African entrepreneurs. It is attuned to the historical and current economic and cultural relationship between Africa and its diaspora and facilitates access to information about trade and investment opportunities, including the complexities of Africa’s investment landscape and emerging trends, in alignment with AGOA and AfCFTA goals.

However, simply sharing trade and investment information is not enough to maximize the benefits of existing trade agreements and the longstanding ties between Africa and its diaspora. Success often depends on understanding key engagement processes—from product standards and regulatory compliance to financing options. Recognizing this, DATI collaborates with other organizations to provide capacity building and technical assistance, equipping both diaspora and continental African entrepreneurs with the tools they need to successfully navigate and thrive in global trade and investment.
